Iain Smale, Managing Director

Iain Smale, Pangolin Associates Managing Director

Iain has worked closely with SME’s, corporate and government entities, and has a reputation for developing smart sustainability plans. He has more than 25 years of business solutions experience in technology and the environmental sector.

Iain’s background in systems integration with its compliancy responsibilities has been invaluable. He is a trusted partner for businesses facing environmental regulations, commercial or supply chain pressures, as well as those wanting to be socially responsible. He is a specialist in carbon neutrality and the National Carbon Offset Standard (NCOS).

Iain is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) and the Carbon Market Institute (CMI). He is regularly sought by media for commentary on the carbon economy. He was also a judge for the Sydney Business Awards (Sustainable Businesses) for several years running, and the Banksia Sustainability Awards in an ongoing capacity.

In his own community, Iain helps the Blue Mountains World Heritage Institute with carbon reduction and carbon neutrality strategies for local SMEs.

Chris Wilson, Director of Sustainability Advisory Services

Chris Wilson, Pangolin AssociatesChris is a developer and provider of a suite of sustainability advisory services. He constructs and maintains frameworks and management systems that deliver effective environmental outcomes and efficiency gains. Chris has several years experience in the sector.

Chris is certified as an Associate Environmental Auditor through Exemplar Global, and a full member of the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand. He has a Master’s Degree in Environmental Management from the University of New South Wales, and a Bachelor’s Degree in The History & Philosophy of Science from Griffith University.

Chris is a Registered Greenhouse and Energy Auditor (Category 1) under section 75A of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 through the Australian Government’s Clean Energy Regulator. He is also a member of the general committee for the Australian Institute of Environmental Accounting.

Matthew Curnow, Director

Matthew Curnow, Pangolin Associates Director

Matthew has worked in the sustainability field since 2006. His knowledge and experience in sustainable business practices, and particularly his specialisation in the area of energy efficiency, is key to the company’s offerings. He has successfully developed new products and services that assist clients in their requirements for a sustainable workplace, including newly designed solutions for small and medium organisations in South Australia.

Matthew is a founding member of Trees Please! Inc. (a Landcare group). Currently he is the Chairman of the Adelaide Hills Council Sustainability Advisory Group, the Joint Energy Chair for the Conservation Council of South Australia’s Environmental Standing Committee.

Dr Davide Ross, Director

Pangolin Associates Director, Davide RossDavide has worked in the area of GHG emission abatement and energy efficiency from combustion and gasification of biosolids, municipal waste and low-rank coal for over 20 years.

He is a Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) with the Efficiency Valuation Organisation. He has also completed courses conducted by SAI Global on Implementing and Maintaining an Environmental Management System and Advanced GHG Compliance, Global Footprint Network (GFN) into Ecological Footprinting, and via the Energy Efficiency Council, International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP).

Davide holds a PhD and a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from The University of Adelaide. Post PhD, the Japanese Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) awarded him a prestigious Research Fellowship. He is a published author of 14 scientific articles in peer reviewed scientific journals. He has presented his work at 16 international conferences.

Davide is a Registered Greenhouse and Energy Auditor (Category 1) under section 75A of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 through the Australian Government’s Clean Energy Regulator. He is also a member of the Australian Institute of Environmental Accounting (AIEA), IChemE and the Efficiency Valuation Organisation (EVO).

Principal Consultants

Dr Samuel Phua, Principal Consultant, Environment and Energy Engineering

Sam is an environment, energy and carbon services consultant with extensive greenhouse gas emissions and energy assurance and advisory experience across a wide range of industries. He is Pangolin Associates’ expert in carbon origination establishment projects, such as the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI).

As a Registered Chartered Chemical Engineer (CEng, MIChemE) and Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng, MIEAust), his areas of expertise include greenhouse and energy audits and assurance engagements under Australia’s NGER, CFI, NCOS schemes, and the international CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project). Sam conducts energy audits and undertakes environmental risk reviews under EPA Regulations and environmental license-to-operate.

Sam is the lead author for one the world’s first Improved Forest Management-Logged to Protected Forests (IFM-LtPF) Methodology under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). He is author for several scientific journal papers and reviews on VCS methodologies, Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standard (CCBS) project design descriptions.

Sam holds a PhD in Biochemical Engineering. He also holds a Graduate Certificate in Sciences and Technology Commercialisation majoring in Operations Management, an Honours Degree in Chemical Engineering, and a Diploma in Chemical Process Technology majoring in petroleum derivatives.

Sam is the first verifier in Australia that has successfully taken airports through the internationally recognised Airport Carbon Accreditation program. He is also a Registered Greenhouse and Energy Auditor (Category 1 and Category 2) with the Clean Energy Regulator, and listed on Australia’s National Engineering Register (NER).

Auditing & Research

Dr Adina Cirtog, Emissions and Energy Auditor

With over six years of experience in the field of energy and emissions auditing, Adina provides clients with practical energy efficiency solutions. She has conducted numerous energy efficiency audits and assessments in accordance with AS/NZS 3598:2014 (Level 1, 2 & 3), and GHG assessments across various industries and government sectors. She also provides assurance audits under the NGER.

Adina is a Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) awarded by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) in conjunction with the Efficiency Valuation Organisation (EVO). She also brings knowledge of consulting and planning service provisioning for technical equipment in building and processes. Previously she was a design engineer in the Romanian branch for Fact GmbH (Germany). She developed digital plant construction designs for German companies covering electrical, ventilation, water and gas piping specifications.

Adina holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Japan. She holds Master’s and Bachelor’s Degrees of Power Systems Engineering (Electrical) from Politehnica University of Timisoara, Romania. This includes a year of study in the University of Stuttgart, Germany. Adina’s PhD demonstrates the research expertise that complements her role as an Energy Auditor.  She is a published author of several scientific articles in peer reviewed international journals.

As a student leader, Adina was active in youth policies development through various NGO’s.

Alden Kirkpatrick, Energy Auditor

Alden completes type 2 energy audits (AS/NZS 3598:2014) for large commercial and industrial sites. He also audits and consults on renewables and energy saving opportunities for residences and small businesses.

Alden chairs the South Australian chapter of the Sustainable Engineering Society (SENG). This follows more than two years of experience as Treasurer and Events Coordinator for the chapter and membership of the organising committee for the 2015 National SENG Conference.

Previously Alden consulted for Resonant Solutions on an energy-based economic system to quantify and account for externalities in engineering and business practice. He also has extensive customer service experience.

Alden holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechatronic) and a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Adelaide. He was awarded the ‘Best Energy Related Project’ prize at the Mech. Engineering Level IV Project Exhibition in 2012.

Dr Michael du Plessis, Senior Associate

Michael has more than 20 years of experience in Innovation and Sustainability. His previous roles in the industry include a long career with ICI and later Orica Australia. More recently Michael was Innovation and R&D Manager for Sydney Water Corporation.

Michael has a PhD in chemistry. He is passionate about helping organisations improve the return on their investment in innovation and sustainability. He is a specialist in the use of economic input-output analysis tools for sustainability accounting including measurement of carbon, water, energy and ecological footprints.

Michael has worked in a variety of countries including South Africa, United Kingdom and Australia.
 His experience covers a wide range of industry sectors, including: mining, water utilities, chemicals, explosives, manufacturing, public sector research agencies and universities.

Michael is an Honorary Associate within the Integrated Sustainability Analysis (ISA) Research Team at The University of Sydney. This gives him access to the latest research in the development of environmentally extended Input Output Analysis methodologies and tools.

Additionally, he is a member of the Australian Water Association (AWA), an Accredited New Product Development Professional (NPDP) of the Product Development Management Association (PDMA), and a member of the Alternative Technology Association (ATA).

Serena Li, Emissions and Energy Auditor

Serena carries out Pangolin’s Greenhouse Gas Assessments and assists with Energy Audits. She holds a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering Degree from the Guangdong University of Technology, China.

In 2007, she joined Guangdong Environmental Protection Bureau to provide sustainability evaluation on water and energy sectors. After that, she worked as an environmental consultant with Yinlu Civil and Environmental Pty Ltd. She specialised in environmental impact statement techniques and EIA procedures, life cycle assessment, policy and strategy implementation, environmental investigation and local carbon trading scheme.

Serena completed a Master of Environmental Science Degree from the University of New South Wales in 2012. Her master’s thesis focused on the environmental impact assessment and risk analysis of silver nano-particles application on water and wastewater treatment.

Nareshkumar Suneja, Emissions and Energy Auditor

Naresh is an environment, energy and carbon services consultant with extensive greenhouse gas emissions, energy and environmental impact assessment experience across a wide range of industries.

Naresh is an ISO 14064 certified Lead Auditor and Trainer (Greenhouse Gas Inventories), and ISO 14001 certified Lead Auditor (Environmental Management Systems). He has extensive experience in international greenhouse gas abatement mechanisms like Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and CDM Gold Standard (GS), as well as greenhouse gas accounting mechanisms such as the CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project). He has a key interest in project / programme based sustainable development.

Prior to joining Pangolin Associates, from 2007 Naresh worked for third party verification companies SGS and TUV NORD. He has worked in the sustainability field globally, in Africa, the Middle East and South East Asia Pacific regions.

Naresh holds a Master’s Degree in Technology specialising in Energy Studies from the University of Pune, India. He also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.

Harald Grabner, Energy Auditor and NABERS Assessor

Harald is a degree-qualified engineer in mechanical building services. He has extensive knowledge in the design, commissioning and operation of building facilities within a wide range of properties. Harald is an accredited assessor of the National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) and Commercial Building Disclosure (CBD). He conducts site audits and advises on how to improve our clients’ energy and water performance.

Harald has 15 years of industry experience and a background in finance. He is recognised for innovative, tailored solutions that future-proof business operations. He is also known for his proactive, hands-on approach.

In Germany, Harald performed building audits and feasibility studies for retail assets. He also supervised the re-modelling of large-scale shopping centres and prepared energy efficiency programs for retail and wholesale stores throughout Europe.

Since his move to Australia in 2008 he has been responsible for day-by-day operations of industrial and commercial properties.

Harald strongly believes that today’s challenges are opportunities to improve future living conditions while reducing human impact on the natural environment.

Dr Sunil Sharma, Senior Forestry Specialist

Sunil is an expert in climate change mitigation. He is instrumental in working with Pangolin’s team on forestry projects under the Federal Government’s Emissions Reduction Fund (formerly the Carbon Farming Initiative, or CFI).

Sunil also specialises in the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) mechanism. He is a REDD, Improved Forest Management (IFM) Methodology, and Jurisdictional Nested REDD Program specialist under the Voluntary Carbon Standard Association (VCSA). This is an international standard for greenhouse gas accounting in the voluntary carbon market.

Sunil held an adjunct academic position as Senior Lecturer at the School of Environment at Flinders University, South Australia, between 2013-2016. He is a professional forester with over 20 years of experience and academic credentials. Sunil has provided technical services to a number of forestry carbon projects under the Australian Government’s schemes. His team received funding from the Department of the Environment for developing a Woodland Rehabilitation Methodology under the CFI. The methodology has been submitted to the department for approval.

Sunil has a great passion for natural resource management and sustainability. He is determined to provide excellence in the project development and accreditation processes of CFI, REDD+, Remote Sensing and GIS. In addition to forestry services, his work extends to ecosystem service assessment, NR project evaluation, and stakeholder consultation.

Zoran Cuckovic, Energy Auditor

Zoran is an energy engineer and carbon management consultant. He conducts energy efficiency audits and GHG assessments for Pangolin’s clients across public and private sectors. In 2015, he was part of the first Pangolin Associates sponsored Level IV research project, where his research on the Automatic Tube Cleaning System (ATCS) achieved significant results in measuring and quantifying energy efficiency in HVAC applications.

Zoran has engineering experience in a broad range of industries. His engagement in the field of building services is particularly impressive. He has worked on and designed mechanical services systems for a number of high profile construction projects in South Australia. Zoran has conducted numerous assessments pertaining to energy efficiency in class 1-9 buildings, including National Construction Code (NCC) and Verification Method JV3 assessments.

Zoran holds an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering and Economics from the University of Adelaide.

Dr Helen Chandler, Energy Auditor

Helen has worked in the carbon management sector since 2007. Following a role as a senior emissions auditor for greenhouse gas emissions audits, she moved into the area of carbon risk and opportunity, building a tool for assessing carbon exposure risk for Australian businesses.

Research in carbon credit origination projects led to co-authorship of a Verified Carbon Standard (VCS)-approved methodology for Improved Forest Management-Logged to Protected Forests (IFM-LtPF). She has used this expertise to provide support for Pangolin Associates in assurance engagements for the former Carbon Farming Initiative and current Australian government NGER scheme. She now brings her carbon industry experience to energy audits for light commercial and small businesses.

Helen holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Adelaide and a DPhil from the University of Oxford.

Dr Sandra O’Sullivan, Emissions and Energy Auditor

Sandra has worked in the carbon management area since 2007. She has conducted numerous greenhouse gas emissions assessments and energy efficiency audits across a wide range of organisations.

Sandra has significant experience in the development and implementation of carbon abatement management strategies, marginal abatement cost curve analysis, energy efficiency programs and renewable energy plans. She has worked with both the government and private sectors. This experience led to the position of Expert Evaluator for the European Commission within the SME instrument for the development of low-carbon and energy efficient systems.

Prior to carbon management, Sandra worked as a fisheries scientist for the South Australian and Queensland Governments. She has successfully published research findings in international, peer-reviewed journals.

Sandra holds a Bachelor of Science from the University College Cork, Ireland. She has a PhD in Fish Population Dynamics from Marine Institute, Ireland.

Takako Wakiyama, Emissions and Energy Analyst

Takako is an environmental research scientist focusing on climate change and energy. She helps Pangolin’s clients achieve emissions reductions, including Science Based Targets projects.

Takako works on climate change, energy and land use issues at research institutes. She has analysed carbon emission reductions towards 2030 and 2050. Her research also includes carbon and electricity simulation analysis, and environmental impact assessment of energy use and land use, using econometrics and input-output methods.

Currently Takako is a PhD student at the Integrated Sustainability Analysis Group, School of Physics, the University of Sydney. She is developing a new tool to conduct economic, social and environmental impact assessment of business activities examining supply chains of a product in multi-regional trading transactions.

Takako holds a Master of Science in Environment and Development from the University of East Anglia, UK. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Economics focusing on international financial economics.

Scott McIntosh, 
WA State Manager

As State Manager for Western Australia Scott is responsible for managing a large client base of both SMEs and corporate businesses. He also works closely with strategic partners such as the Master Builders Association, Enterprise Connect and Beilby Recruitment.

Prior to joining Pangolin Associates, Scott was a Business Development Consultant specialising in helping SMEs and corporate clients grow their business nationally and internationally. Scott brings global experience to this role after operating in the UK and Europe.

An in depth knowledge of carbon issues surrounding businesses, and with greenhouse gas auditing skills, Scott in conjunction with the West Coast Institute of Training created a Diploma of Carbon Management course. He now lectures in this program.

Susan Kitchener, Emissions and Energy Auditor

Susan has more than 20 years of experience in senior leadership roles for multinational corporations across diverse areas such as biotechnology and financial services. In recent years she has helped organisations understand the business case for sustainability, and maximise the positive business impacts of such a strategy.

Susan has focused on sustainability since 2008. She studied at the Institute of Environmental Studies (UNSW) and has worked with UBS Australia and their major community partner, United Way Australia. Working collaboratively with other consultants, Susan has also produced a report on the Human Rights Risk in ASX100 companies.

Susan holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Sydney, and a Master of Environmental Management from UNSW.

Dr Maartje Sevenster, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Consultant

Maartje has been active as a life-cycle management consultant for more than a decade. She has supported a wide range of industries in developing better understanding of and implementing life-cycle thinking in their business strategies. She conducted policy support studies for a number of European government departments as well as NGOs and was a long-term consultant concerning the Dutch industry-government covenant on life-cycle energy efficiency.

Maartje is a specialist in process-based life-cycle assessment, including carbon, water and energy footprinting. She has the necessary knowledge of technology as well as business management to appreciate the specifics of industrial sectors and processes. Her experience covers a wide range of industries, including agrifood, paper, metals, textiles, chemicals, fossil and renewable energy, packaging and waste treatment.

Maartje is preferred supplier for Supply Chain Management in the NSW Sustainability Advantage program and an active member of the Australian LCA society (ALCAS).
