Energy and carbon management firm, Pangolin Associates, will team up with the Carbon Trade Exchange (CTX) to offset emissions for the Bledisloe Cup 2012.

On behalf of the Australian Rugby Union and Qantas Wallabies, CTX will purchase carbon credits supporting Australian forestry projects and New Zealand energy efficiency initiatives. Carbon credits will offset both the Bledisloe Test and Trophy Tour, sending a clear message to other sports organisations and businesses about accountability for their own environmental footprint.

CTX selected Pangolin Associates for their highly accredited and experienced technical team. Wayne Sharpe, Carbon Trade Exchange CEO, comments, “The first step for any organisation to offset their emissions is measuring their carbon footprint which essentially must be done by a professional, reputable and accredited organisation such as Pangolin Associates.”

Pangolin’s auditors are registered with the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) scheme. Their calculations will determine the number of credits purchased, or tonnes of carbon prevented or removed from the atmosphere. One credit is the equivalent of a tonne of greenhouse gas.

Carbon credits will offset each Wallabies’ greenhouse gas emissions, electricity usage, and the impact of rugby ticket holders. This includes transport and waste produced at the events.

Pangolin Associates Senior Consultant, Mike O’Neill says, “The team at Pangolin Associates is delighted to support the ARU in offsetting the Bledisloe Cup Match by calculating the emissions associated with the event. Having recently seen the Olympics in London build on many of Sydney’s sustainability initiatives it is great to be part of the Wallabies’ continued drive to reduce the environmental impact of sport.”
