ESG Materiality Assessment

A Materiality Assessment helps organisations understand which Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) topics are most relevant to their business and stakeholders. It provides a structured way to identify where the most significant impacts, risks and opportunities exist, helping organisations focus effort and resources where they can have the greatest influence.

As part of our broader sustainability advisory services, we help organisations develop a clear understanding of the topics that matter most. The assessment provides a foundation for ESG strategy and reporting, helping organisations understand what matters most and respond to evolving stakeholder expectations and regulatory requirements.

Our Approach

Every organisation operates in a different context. Our approach combines industry-aligned research, stakeholder engagement and structured methodology to build a clear picture of the issues most relevant to the organisation and its value chain.

We consider industry trends, reporting frameworks and emerging requirements alongside internal priorities and stakeholder perspectives. By bringing these inputs together, we identify and prioritise the topics that are most likely to influence organisational performance, reporting obligations and evolving regulatory expectations.

Our ESG Materiality Assessment is conducted through a six-phase structured process, as detailed below:

  1. Initiation & Mobilisation: Define scope, align stakeholders, and establish governance and delivery approach.
  2. Research & Analysis: Identify a comprehensive range of ESG topics through a review of relevant frameworks, industry benchmarking, existing data and regulatory requirements.
  3. Material Topic Selection: Refine and consolidate topics into a focused set for assessment through thematic grouping and frequency analysis.
  4. Stakeholder Perspectives: Capture internal and external views on ESG topic importance. Stakeholder responses are analysed, normalised, and scored to ensure consistency across datasets.
  5. Matrix Development: Analyse and prioritise topics using quantitative scoring and visualisation.
  6. Materiality Assessment Report: Deliver clear insights, a validated matrix, and strategic recommendations.

Assessment Outcomes

The findings are presented in a Materiality Assessment Report, supported by a materiality matrix with clear visual outputs, alongside detailed analysis of priority ESG topics and their strategic implications.  The assessment provides a practical foundation for ESG strategy, roadmap development and regulatory disclosure, enabling organisations to focus on the ESG issues that deliver the greatest impact and value.
