Founder & Co-Managing Director

Biography

Iain is the Co-Managing Director and a Founder of Pangolin Associates. With more than 20 years of experience in the carbon sector, he is recognised as one of the pioneers of the industry in Australia. Under Iain’s leadership, Pangolin has grown from a small four-person consultancy established in 2010 into a successful medium-sized enterprise.

Prior to founding Pangolin, Iain spent 18 years working in the IT sector, initially in Adelaide and later in Sydney. In 2007, he changed career direction, leaving the IT industry to establish the Sydney operations of Carbon Planet, one of Australia’s first independent carbon management companies. This move reflected a growing concern about the environmental impacts of business-as-usual commercial activity and a desire to contribute to meaningful change.

Three years later, Iain identified an opportunity to expand on Carbon Planet’s work and, alongside three like-minded individuals, founded Pangolin Associates. Today, the company has developed a highly specialised team and a comprehensive suite of decarbonisation, sustainability and carbon reporting services that compete with leading consultancies. Pangolin’s client base has also expanded across a diverse range of industries and jurisdictions.

Iain is recognised for his resourcefulness and ability to bring together people, organisations and ideas to solve complex challenges within a rapidly evolving sector. Over the years, he has built strong relationships with clients, government departments and the broader business community. His collaborative approach has led to long-standing partnerships with accountancies, private equity firms and complementary industry specialists, which have played an important role in Pangolin’s growth and reputation.

In 2023, Iain negotiated and led Pangolin’s integration into the Viridios Group, an Australian company with a global presence in corporate climate solutions and asset management across both voluntary and compliance carbon markets. Following the integration, he guided the business through a strategic restructure focused on supporting Australian organisations preparing for the transition to a net zero economy and newly legislated climate disclosure obligations.

In addition to his role at Pangolin, Iain actively supports sustainability initiatives across the Australian business community. Since 2016, he has served as a judge for high-profile programs including the National Banksia Sustainability Awards. Iain is also a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (MAICD) and the Carbon Market Institute (CMI).
